Mark began to introduce the guest speaker to the listeners, but then stopped for a while. He had forgotten her name.
Barbara hid her valuable things when she went on vacation. When she came back, she couldn't
remember where she'd put them.
Perhaps you've had such experiences like these. Most people have. But most of them haven't
realized that they have a memory problem. Neither do they know a simple but important fact: Memory
can be improved. If you'll just accept that, the following will show you how.
First, relax. If you are over worried about something, you'll forget it. If you keep telling yourself that
your memory is bad, your mind will come to believe it and you won't remember things. When you forget something, don't follow up with saying like "Oh, my god! I always forget things!" Such words will have a bad result on you and your memory.
But relaxing isn't enough. To improve your memory, you'll need to take an active role. Like your
body, your memory can be made strong through exercise. Look for opportunities to exercise your
memory. For example, if you're learning a language, try to actively remember a lot of new words.
If you don't take notice of things actively, you won't remember them. So, you can make pictures of
what you see in your mind every day. For example, don't just put your keys down! If you want to find
them again, make a mind picture of the place where you're putting them.

(     ) 38. The first two paragraphs just tell us__________ .

A. Barbara was a very rich person.                  B. Mark often forgot his friends' names

(     ) 40.The word "opportunities" in the fifth paragraph means "_______."

A. places            B. activities.               C. positions            D. chances

(     ) 41. According to the passage, _________ can make your memory better.

A. realizing your memory problems                B. talking to your friends
C. making mind pictures of what you see                   D. doing sports every day

E

Do you know of anyone who uses the truth to deceive (欺骗) ? When someone tells you something
that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he can give you a false picture.
For example , some might say, "I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery (彩票) . It was great. I took

that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars! "
This guy's a winner , right?  Maybe , maybe not. We then discover that he bought  $200 worth of tickets,

and only one was a winner. He's really a big loser!
He didn't say anything that was false, but he left out important information on purpose. That's called
a half-truth. Half-truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.
Some politicians often use this trick. Let's say that during Governor Smith's last term, her state lost one

million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents (对手) says, "

During Governor Smith's term, the state lost one million jobs ! " That's true. However, an honest statement

would  have been , " During Governor Smith's term , the state had a net gain of two million jobs. "
Advertisers(广告商) will sometimes use half-truths. It's against the law to make false statements so
they try to mislead you with the truth. An advertisement might say, " Nine out of ten doctors advised their
patients to take Yucky Pills to cure toothache. " It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and
nine of them work for the Yucky Company.
This kind of deception happens too often. It's a sad fact of life: Lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well.

(     ) 42. We may infer that the author believes people should___________.

buy lottery tickets if possible                B. make use of half-truths
C. be careful about what they are told            D. not trust the Yucky Company

(     ) 43. How many examples does the writer give to show how the truth is used to deceive?

One               B. Two           C. Three           D. Four

(     ) 44. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

Using half-truths is against the law.      B. Technically, half-truths are in fact lies.

C.Yucky Pills is a very good medicine for toothache.

D.Government Smith did a good job job during her last term.
