Lu Canglong, a post-90s born in Lishui, Zhejiang Province, invented the “cloud-maker” profession after getting inspiration (灵感) from clouds. In 2015, Lu was shocked when he happened to see a large evening cloud above his head.

“That was a fantastic cloud. It seemed to burn the sky,” said Lu. “So I wanted to keep it!”

How to keep the beautiful moment became a problem for him. Lu took a picture of the clouds and simulated (仿造) them and then stored them in a clear cube (立方体). Such simulated clouds have become popular among his fans.

In 2019, Lu decided to give up his work because his spare time wasn't enough to make enough clouds to meet the increasing need. In the winter of 2019, he opened his online store “Sky Fair” on Taobao. In 2020 alone, he sold over 200, 000 “clouds” to more than 40, 000 people across China, and sales reached more than 1 million yuan.

Apart from cloud-makers, other creative professions have also appeared across China. Wen Chenhua is an armorsmith (铸甲师). He made his first armor in 2012. It was a Song-Dynasty style fish-scale armor weighing 30 kilos. He hoped to sell for 50, 000 yuan. But the customer offered 1.5 times price. Wen opened his Taobao store in 2014. His yearly sales are around 6 million yuan now.

As of August 2021, there were at least 200, 000 creative culture shops on Taobao. Around 77 percent of these businesses were operated (经营) by people younger than 30.

Thanks to the huge population of Chinese customers as well as the massive (巨大的) sales on online shopping platforms, many new businesses and services are now able to thrive. That brings huge money to these businessmen.

“In the age of the Internet, more and more people are able to take up a profession in which their interest lies,” an industry insider said.

31. Why did Lu give up his work in 2019?

A. He only wants to earn much more money. B. Something unlucky happened in his life.

C. He needed more time for his part-time job. D. Someone invited him to open a shop on Taobao.

Dubai is home to the world's tallest building and the world's largest mall. Now it has just opened another record-breaking place—the deepest diving pool in the world. As part of the new Deep Dive Dubai, the pool is 60 meters deep. It has broken the record set by Poland's Deepspot, which is over 45 meters.

The Deep Dive Dubai pool is filled with 14 million liters (升) of fresh water and is five times bigger than an Olympic swimming pool. Guinness (吉尼斯) gave it the “Deepest Swimming Pool for Diving” title on June 27, 2021. The pool is now open only to invited guests, but will open to the public later this year.

The indoor pool is housed inside a 1, 500-square-meter oyster-shaped (牡蛎形的) building. But the biggest star of Deep Dive Dubai is actually the pool's underwater city. Divers can visit the lost city apartments and play underwater table football. The pool is also used as an underwater film-making factory—the largest of its kind in the area.

Deep Dive Dubai offers courses for both diving beginners and experienced divers. They can also visit the pool and the underwater city by themselves after a tour with one of the diving guides there. Some cameras have been fixed around the pool to ensure (确保) the safety of divers at every corner.

The oyster-shaped building also has a restaurant with large windows and TV screens, allowing non-diving families and friends to watch from dry land.

“There are quite a few diving pools in the world that are deep, but this one is so much more interesting,” Deep Dive Dubai director Jarrod Jablonski said. “There are so many things so its really not fair to call it a pool.”

35. What can we learn about Deep Dive Dubai from Paragraph 2?

It's hard to turn down junk food. However, eating too much junk food can harm your body, particularly if you're between the ages of 10 and 19.

“Junk food shapes adolescent (青春期的) brains in ways that impair (损害) their ability to think, learn and remember. It can also make it harder to control impulsive (冲动的) behaviors,” said Amy Reichelt, a brain and nutrition specialist at Western University, Canada.

Reichelt and two other researchers reviewed more than 100 studies about how poor food choices can affect adolescent brains. They found adolescents are more sensitive than any other age group to foods with a lot of fat and sugar, as their brains are not yet fully formed.

Adolescent brains are still developing the ability to control themselves. The prefrontal cortex (前额皮质) is the part of the brain that helps us do this. However, this region doesn’t fully develop until we are in our early 20s.

Meanwhile, teen brains get more excited from rewards. The parts of the brain that make us feel good when we eat junk food are fully developed by the teen years. In fact, these regions are even more sensitive (敏感的) when we are young. Therefore , the teen brain has two strikes (攻击) against it when it comes to turning down junk food.

Reichelt and her team conducted their own study using mice, whose brains develop much like our own. They discovered that “teenage” mice that had a high-fat diet performed worse on memory tests than those eating a normal diet.

So, what's the best way to say no to junk food? Researchers suggest exercise. When we exercise, the brain’s reward system becomes less sensitive to food cues (暗示). Exercise also helps our brains grow and become better able to make smart decisions.

40. The second paragraph is written to __________.

A. describe what junk food is B. explain why teenagers like junk food

C. explain how junk food can harm teen brains D. show how food helps human brains develop

41. According to the study, why is it hard for young people to turn down junk food?

A. Because they are more sensitive to the joy junk food offers.

B. Because their brains are fully developed.

C. Because they need energy for their development.

D. Because they have a low level of excitement in their brains.

42. According to the researchers, how can exercise help us refuse junk food?

A. It makes the brain's reward system more sensitive. B. It reduces the brain's strong wish for junk food.

C. It helps humans make quick decisions. D. It slows down the brains' activity.

43. What's the best title of this passage?

A. Say no to junk food B. Less developed adolescent brains

C. Two strikes against junk food D. Control impulsive behaviors

Hotpot is popular in China today. Did ancient Chinese people have hotpot?

Ancient Chinese people had hotpot as early as the Shang Dynasty. At that time, people boiled foods and soups in bronze cauldrons (青铜鼎). The cauldron had two parts—one was the pot to cook foods in soup, the other part was a layer (层) or a space inside the cauldron to hold firewood. But at that time, the cauldron was only for a single person to eat from.

During the Han Dynasty, people divided a pot into several parts to enjoy different taste.

During the Tang Dynasty, having hotpot was a popular thing. When people held family feasts (宴席), they would prepare hotpot. People of the Song Dynasty had hotpot to welcome winter.

Huoguo, the Chinese name for hotpot, was mentioned by Yuan Mei, a poet and foodie in the Qing Dynasty, in a book about all kinds of food. At that time, hotpot was very popular. People put all kinds of meats and vegetables into pots made of different materials, such as copper and iron.

Hotpot also became a famous royal (宫廷的) dish, called reguo. It’s said that Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty loved hotpot so much that he had it for almost every meal. He once held a big hotpot feast, inviting more than 5, 000 people to enjoy about 1, 550 hotpots.

If you look around your city, you might find girls wearing hanfu in subways or people wearing T-shirt with Chinese characters on the street. A new trend (潮流) is taking hold in China——guochao, or China-chic.

According to a recent report, searches about guochao on a lifestyle website have risen by 170 percent from the same period last year, and reviews have risen by nearly 40 percent. The guochao trend is happening, but what is it?

The term stands for the rise of China's own fashion trends. It adds new meaning to the term “Made in China”, which has been considered as the representation of Chinese culture and aesthetics (美学) offered by Chinese brands.

The guochao trend attracted people's attention in 2018. Before that, big-name foreign companies ruled the world market. To win market share, many Chinese brands followed in the footsteps of those western brands. But that year, Chinese sportswear brand Li-Ning changed things up. During the 2018 New York Fashion Week, Li-Ning introduced its Taoism (道家) -inspired Wu Dao collection (系列时装). The collection not only had a trendy look, but also had something to do with traditional Chinese culture. It immediately drew attention at home and abroad. As a result, the company recorded 20 percent revenue (收益) growth in 2018.

The trend has spread rapidly to other areas and products, from food and drinks to clothing, mobile phones and electric vehicles. For example, White Rabbit, whose candies bring back childhood memories for many people, has brought its new products out.

Now, the guochao trend is moving to the next stage. But no matter how the guochao trend develops, there is one thing that won’t change: Behind the craze (热潮) is people’s confidence in the country's development and national culture.
